Veteran Charleston punk band the 33’s blew out the doors on Friday night at the Oasis. It’s been a while since I’ve seen dudes sporting the classic twin fin mohawk, but it worked. The pit spun, boots stomped, and people had a good time. Here’s some photos:

I made it down to the Tin Roof on Saturday night and caught two bands from up north, well two hours up north anyway. Openers The Unawares had a cool pust-punk vibe going and delivered a solid set of swingers and bangers. Death Becomes Even the Maiden cranked it up a few notches and stoked the crowd with some fretboard gymnastics and visceral vocals. Both bands are from Columbia and seemed to have their own entourages that filled the place. Nice to see some new faces. I snagged some CDs and posted a few songs below the photos. Here they are:

GORILLA CODE | Flight 1549 audio from the FAA

I’m a fan of raw unfiltered geek-speak from people who make things happen, and that’s exactly why I wanted to seek out that actual audio from the flight control recordings of the US Airways flight 1549 that landed in the Hudson River. The following recording was released much earlier today by the FAA and reported in the New York Times soon after, and widely after that. It is the meat of the discourse between the captain of that flight and New York TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach Control), which is the primary air traffic control for the metropolitan New York City area, when he landed in the water.

He never says “mayday, mayday, mayday”, or “I’m declaring an emergency”.

Obama’s election was tethered to hope. I get my hope from knowing that there are disciplined and experienced people doing things right, every fucking day.

Note: I ran this through audio processing to eliminate silence, so this interaction is compressed from a 20 minute time span to this five minute clip. Check out the entire audio archive at the FAA website.

The Charleston Comedy Festival has come and gone. For those of you that couldn’t make it or missed a few show, I’ve collected all the videos we posted during the festival. There are some real gems in here, so take your pick. Justin Nathanson of The Cut Company and his crew provided about half of these videos and we are grateful for his quick turnaround and mad skillz in the editing room. North Charleston Coliseum hosted a regional PBR bullriding contest last night and it continues tonight. They were kind enough to let us behind the scenes and I made a short video about it. Don’t be fooled by the size of the pens, these beasts are enormous. I give a lot of credit to these guys for getting out there and doing that.

We’ve just launched a new feature for the site called LOVE | HATE and the responses are already rolling in. It’s a combination flirt/rant board that lets people submit messages anonymously.

From the intro:

Love. Hate. Funny things both. If you don’t express yourself, well, these feelings have a way of messing you all up inside. Which is why you’ve got to get those feelings out. And we’re here to help. With I Love You/I Hate You, we’re inviting you, our readers, to sing the praises of that hottie you saw at the club last night — you know, the one that wasn’t the douchebag with the popped collar and way too much Pick Up Artist Body Spray — or totally diss that ditz who cut you off in traffic — you know the one who was texting, putting on make up, and singing the latest tune from Britney Spears. There are a couple of ground rules though. One, don’t use the names of people and places of business. And, two, don’t even think about threatening anybody. That kind of behavior won’t be tolerated. VIDEO | Polar Plunge at Folly Beach

Braving a chilly 48 degree day, hundreds turned out for the Folly beach version of the Polar Beach Plunge on New Year’s Day. Although a bit smaller than the plunge at Dunleavey’s, there were a lot more funky people in crazy costumes. The event started at Snapper Jack’s and raised money and canned goods for the Lowcountry Food Bank. Judging by how quickly the official towels were given out, they probably gathered a bunch of food. Also, they raised over $400 in couple of hours with a jar by the door. Way to go Folly!

VIDEO | Unsilent Night

The guys from New Music Collective held their annual performance of Unsilent Night on Sunday. The music, by Phil Kline, is divided into four distinct recordings and passed out to any number of boomboxes. The goal is to gather a bunch of people together and have all boomboxes play their tracks simultaneously and walk through downtown. About thirty people showed up and braved the chilly winds, boomboxes in hand.

The experience was peaceful and surreal. Winding through the streets, I tended to focus on the people around me as the music ebbed in and out. When we finally arrived under the Christmas tree in Marion Square, everyone got a chance to settle into the last few minutes of the piece under the warm glow of christmas lights.

It’s postmodern carolling for a techie generation. I think I’ll have some deconstructed eggnog tonight.
