Photos: Rev Theory at the Music Farm

The Reggae block party last Saturday wasn’t really my scene so I left early. On the walk back I heard some welcome heavy guitar bouncing out of the Music Farm. I decided to stop in and see who it was and found Souls Harbor cranking out an opening set. Amy Hutto (98x) […]

Photos: The many faces of Joe Buck

Hillbilly proto-demon Joe Buck played the Black Cart last night and delivered one of the most intense and inspiring shows I’ve seen in a long time. He sat near the edge of the stage with a guitar and a drum pedal and channeled old and primevil energies straight through the crowd. I guess he’s known […]

Photos: UnexpecT, Warbringer, Nile

Local metalheads turned out in force last Friday night, bringing 400+ to the Music Farm. Warbringer brought at least a hundred of those into the pit and delivered a pummeling set. UnexpecT turned out bizarre circus metal with mind bending timing changes. And, of course, Nile growled and machine-gunned their way into […]

A Decent Animal bids farewell

Here’s some photos from Saturday’s farewell gig at the Pour House.  A Decent Animal was joined by Lindsay Holler and Sea of Cortez and all played to a full house.
Said Graphic Guru John Royall, “Much-loved local rock band A Decent Animal (Bassist Richard Weld, Pictured) filled the Pour House with well-wishers on Saturday night. They […]

Snake Oil Medicine Show photos

I got a chance to see the newly re-united Snake Oil Medicine Show at the Pour House on Saturday. They decorated the stage with all kinds of toys art and blacklights, creating a surreal glow around happy people playing happy music. Frisky fiddler Caroline Pond shined with one of the most distinctive voices […]

The end of an era: Bert’s Bar

Bert’s Bar held a final blowout on Friday night to celebrate 30 years of good times and old friends. Hundreds of people showed up to bid farewell to the legendary Sullivan’s Island watering hole. Locals and wellwishers paraded through downtown from the bar to the Firehouse, escorted by a brass band and […]

Agnostic Front assaults Charleston

I totaled my first car listening to Agnostic Front’s third album. Cruising over the california hills from Leaders of the NYC Hardcore scene in the late eighties, their stripped down sound mutated into a punishing Oi!/thrash metal hybrid that led the way for many acts to follow (Hatebreed, anyone?). They decided to call it quits […]

Dragons of Zynth lead Celebration

Charleston has a great reputation as a good tour stop for hipster bands invading down the eastern seaboard, and they usually end up booked at the Village Tavern, Cumberland’s, or the Map Room. All those places are regular bars and cater to their own swarms of barflies. So, when weird synth grinding howlers […]

Toubab not too bad

I actually like hippies. They’re positive, idealistic, and they smile a lot. But some of the people who hang out with them are just looking to get wasted. Hippies generally favor altered states of mind, so they know where to get bags of mind-benders. The meathead leeches know this, so they […]

Nashville Pussy, Exposed

Friday night’s Nashville Pussy show at the Map Room brought out the beast in Charleston. A near capacity crowd drank, slammed, and rocked as the Defilers, Artemus Pyledriver, and Nashville Pussy unleashed a barrage of mega-tunage.
